The difference between Atlas rugs: Taznakht, Beni Ourain, and Azilal
5 March 2026
Morocco has a deep tradition in rug-making, and each region of the Atlas Mountains has its own unique style. When you look at a rug, you often hear three major names: Taznakht, Beni Ourain, and Azilal. Many people get them mixed up. In this article, we will clarify the differences so you can make an informed choice.
Taznakht: Colors and Symbols
Taznakht rugs come from the Small Atlas in southern Morocco, near Ouarzazate. Their characteristic is vibrant colors: red, orange, yellow, and beige, with intricate geometric patterns and numerous Amazigh symbols.
These rugs are full of details and life. If you love color, story, and pattern, Taznakht is your choice. It goes well with homes that want a piece with personality and warmth.
Beni Ourain: White Simplicity
Beni Ourain rugs come from the Middle Atlas. Their characteristic is known worldwide: a white or cream-colored background made of natural wool, with simple black or brown lines in the shape of diamonds.
Beni Ourain rugs are thick and plush, which is why they are known for their warmth and comfort. If you have a modern or simple decor (Scandinavian style) and want a quiet rug that doesn't overwhelm the eye, Beni Ourain is suitable.
Azilal: Freedom and Expression
Azilal rugs come from the Azilal region in the Middle Atlas. These rugs are known for their freedom in design: the weaver weaves what she feels, which is why each Azilal rug is unique and looks like an impromptu work of art.
The background is often white or light, but on top of it are random, irregular patterns and colors, some patches of color, some non-straight lines. If you love art and something that is not too organized, Azilal will appeal to you.
How to choose between them?
- Do you want color, story, and warmth?Taznakht.
- Do you want simplicity, calmness, and thick plush?Beni Ourain.
- Do you want something artistic, free, and unexpected?Azilal.
The Common Denominator
Despite the differences, all three share one thing: they are handmade from natural wool from Atlas sheep, and woven by weavers who have inherited the craft from generation to generation. Whichever one you choose, you are buying an authentic piece with a soul and history, not just something to cover the floor.
