Moroccan Rug Size Guide: The Right Size for Every Room
23 June 2026

When people regret a rug purchase, the reason is usually the size, not the colour or the type. A rug that is too small looks lost in the room, and one that is too large crowds the space. This guide gives you the standard sizes and shows you how to choose well.
Why size matters most
A rug defines a space and pulls the furniture together. When the size is right, a room feels ordered and whole. The general rule: a rug should be large enough that the main furniture sits on it, or at least rests on it with its front legs.
Standard sizes
- Small (around 120 x 80 cm): for hallways, beside a bed, or a small area.
- Medium (around 170 x 120 cm): for a small living room or under a small table.
- Large (around 240 x 170 cm, or 8 x 10 ft): the most popular size for a living room.
- Extra large (around 300 x 200 cm, or 9 x 12 ft): for spacious living rooms.
- Runner: long and narrow, for hallways and kitchens.
How to choose by room
Living room: keep at least the front legs of the sofa on the rug. For the living room we have a dedicated guide.
Bedroom: a large rug under the bed that extends past the sides, or two smaller rugs along each side.
Dining room: the rug should be large enough that the chairs stay on it even when pulled out.
Hallway: a long, narrow runner that follows the length of the hall with a little bare floor on each side.
How to measure
Take a tape measure and measure the space, then mark with tape on the floor where the rug will reach. That way you see the size with your own eyes before buying. For the final choice, colour matters too, so see the colour guide.
